What an Experience!

Daily Vacation Bible School is one of my very favorite experiences! I love teaching; I love music; I love children.  All of that (and more) is part of a DVBS experience. Twenty four (24) beautiful children (age 5 through grade 5) gathered at the First Baptist Church of Malden from August 10 thru 14 to study God's Word; to sing songs of praise to God; to make crafts that illustrate the Bible stories that they learned.  They enjoyed recreation and snack periods.  They got to know people whom they had never met.  And - they reached out in ministry to Royal Family Kids' Camps.  These camps located across this country minister to abused and neglected children.  Our VBS kids and their families gave to RFKC kids offerings amounting to $ 222.26!

On Thursday evening they shared (through their 9 new songs) messages that they had been taught. (Even with all the DVBS programs that I have taught in or directed, I never cease to be amazed at how quickly children learn the songs).

Speaking of the singing at this VBS, I must share about my blessed experience with one of the Kindergarten boys. This lively little boy asked me at the final music class on Friday if we could sing a particular song. (I had invited the children at each of Friday's music classes to just request any of the songs that they had learned, since they didn't have to any longer be learning them.)  So this boy requested " It Is Written,." only he couldn't remember the title, so kept telling me that it was the one about "the desert."  I couldn't remember "the desert" being in any of the songs, but quickly scanned through all the sheets of music to try to see the word "desert" in one of them.  I didn't find it. Then the boy asked to look at the sheets, and I began showing them to him (tho' he couldn't really read).  Suddenly as he just glanced at the titles, he exclaimed: "There it is; that's the one!"   Well- I didn't notice the one place where the word "desert" did appear.  This song was about the Bible story of Jesus going into the wilderness/desert when he was being tempted by Satan.

Obviously that was a lesson taught in his class ~ and this precious little guy connected the song "It Is Written" with the Bible story! "WOW", I thought: "This blessed child of God had been paying much more attention than I would have realized."

There was a lesson to be learned by all of us!  We must be diligent, but - at the same time - be loving and patient, in our teaching - of course, just as the Lord expects of us.

I have long believed that Daily Vacation Bible School is a very important ministry of the church.  Thank You, people of First Baptist Church of Malden for supporting it!
