The Ernest M. Skinner Organ
The majestic Skinner organ, located on the north wall above the pulpit, is one of the finest instruments of its kind in the northeast. It was the gift of Mr. and Mrs. Costello Converse in 1916 following the early morning fire of February 17, 1915 which destroyed the interior of the church building and the Hutchins Organ. The imposing wall of pipes behind the six marble pillars visible to the congregation are but part of the 3,000 pipes of the organ. The sounds of the great, swell, echo, choir, processional, and pedal organs arise from these pipes and the organ's forty five stops. The organ has been carefully upgraded with a new console (Austin) in 1962 and some tonal modifications which have improved the flexibility and the solo and ensemble qualities of the instrument.
Located at the center of the choir loft, situated on the north end of the Sanctuary, six separate organs can be played. Addition to the Pedal included a contra bass (metal). A french trumpet in the Swell and a redesigned mixture were also added. A koppel flute was added in the Choir organ and a mixture of doppel flute in the Great.
